Started in 2006 by the current directors and owners Anne and Ian Walker. Both graduates in sciences, and post graduates in business, Anne and Ian enjoyed successful careers in marketing and advertising working on many iconic national and global brands. With a desire to become more independent, working for themselves, they retired from corporate life in 1990 moved from the big smoke to NZ's northern most town Kaitaia. Three decades later they have a grown family and interests in farming, retail, and commercial property.
Kaitaia is a great place to live. However, like most rural towns, introduction of big box retail resulted in a loss of retail choice and job opportunities. With a strong sense of community, a fundamental value of Folders, Anne and Ian decided to invest in bringing back retail diversity. It started with the creation of an award winning bookshop and now an award winning electronic and appliance business. We also support our community in other ways such as funding the Warriors Rugby League Team to fly to Kaitaia and provide inspiration and mentoring to local school children. We advocate as long as we can deliver want you want, when you need it, and at a nationally competitive price let's support local.
We believe standing still is going backwards so we have a philosophy of continuous improvement. We want to continue to deliver a diverse product range, at the highest possible standard of customer service, across both bricks and mortar and online formats. And, for any reason, we don't get it right we will put it right for you. Because, we wish to live up to our promise, We're always worth the visit!
Where does the name Folders come from?
Starting with books and stationery it soon became apparent the world was changing and traditional file storage was being replaced by digital storage. We needed to change to keep ahead of the market. Unfortunately, our current retail space could not accommodate expansion, so a decision was made to set up a new store in Kaitaia with a new name.
Because the primary motivation for doing this was customers desire to file folders digitally, the brand ‘folders’ was born. Its was catchy, rolled off the tongue, and was easy to remember. Research told us that due to lack of a credible local offering customers were driving south to find what they wanted. Our main competition was actually the motorcar! So, to promote the fact that customers now had a viable local choice we developed the marketing strapline, “We’re always worth the visit”. Customers have been increasingly visiting us ever since!
