A few laundry tips to make clothes last longer

If you're like most people, laundry is one of those necessary evils. It's a chore that has to be done and often corners are cut to get it over with. Our team at Folders not only sell washing machines and clothes driers but also know a thing or two about how to minimise wear on your clothes. To keep clothes looking great - just be sure to wash them the right way! Here are a few tips to follow:

1. Use less detergent than you think you need. Too much detergent can actually make your clothes dirtier and wear them out faster. Stick to the recommended amount or less.

2. Pre-treat stains as soon as you notice them. The sooner you treat a stain, the more likely you are to get it out.

3. Sort your laundry before washing it. Washing similar colours together helps to prevent bleeding and keeps your clothes looking newer for longer.

4. Be careful with the dryer. Over drying your clothes can cause them to shrink and fade, so be sure to check the care labels and dry on a low or delicate setting when possible.

5. Don't forget about storage. Storing your clothes properly can help them keep their shape and prevent moth damage. Be sure to follow the care labels when storing your clothes. Use the correct type of hanger. Thin wire can cause material to stretch and misshape clothes. And, fold knitted clothes rather than hang up.

6. Button, zip or closing your garments so they are less likely to snag another fabric or even snap themselves. You don't want to find clothes hooked to each other.

7. Turn your clothes inside out. This will help prevent wear and tear on the outer side of the garment, prevent pilling, and limit colour fading.

8. To protect delicates use a mesh laundry bag to wash them in. A washing bag is also great for small items like baby clothes and those pesky socks that always seem to escape.

9. Lower the heat setting. Make sure you follow correct temperatures for each type of fabric. Hot water can permanently set stains and cause shrinking and stretching.

10. Be careful using bleach. Too high a concentration can easily damage fabric.

By following these simple rules, you can keep your clothes looking good and lasting longer.
